Maintenance

Scheduled windows that start and complete on their own.

A maintenance window announces planned work: a title, a message, a start and end time, and the components it covers.

Lifecycle

StatusWhen
ScheduledFrom creation until startsAt
In progressFrom startsAt until endsAt
VerifyingNever entered automatically; it exists for Statuspage compatibility
CompletedFrom endsAt, or at once when cancelled

A window runs itself. When you schedule it, Galena starts a background run that sleeps until startsAt, moves the window to In progress, sleeps until endsAt and completes it. Nobody has to be awake for either.

Changing and cancelling

  • Edit a window any time until it completes: times, title, message and components. Each edit bumps the window's version; a run waiting on an older version wakes, sees it was superseded, and stops, while a new run follows the new times.
  • Cancel a window only before it starts. It completes at once and subscribers hear it was cancelled. To end a running window early, edit its end time.

What it changes

While a window is in progress:

  • each covered component shows Maintenance on the page, whatever its monitors say;
  • monitors attached to those components keep running, but their transitions are recorded as suppressed, and nothing customer-facing follows from them;
  • the page lists the window under "Maintenance", with its status, times and components, from the moment it is scheduled until it completes.

Minutes spent in maintenance count as up in the uptime figure, and show on the history strip only on days when nothing worse happened.

Who is told

Subscribers who chose an affected component (or none) hear when a window is first scheduled, when it starts, when it completes, and when it is cancelled. Edits to a scheduled window are not announced again.
